The following companies produce certain containers that have been approved and certified as “bear resistant” through the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee’s (IGBC) testing methodology. Commercially produced containers that are determined to be “bear resistant” receive an individually numbered IGBC decal and inspection receipt.

Other models of Greenlee storage chests may pass the bear resistant test, but this is the only model tested to date. Other brands (e.g., Knaack, Jobsite) of similar construction may also pass, and may be provisionally accepted pending testing.
Key features for provisional acceptance include 16 gauge steel or thicker, reinforced lid with corners that cannot be easily pried up, and no gaps greater than ¼”.
Steel drums of various sizes may also be considered bear resistant. Drums must be in good condition (no excessive corrosion, holes, or crimping) and have a lid that attaches securely with a closing ring. Nut-and-bolt closing rings are preferable, but lever-lock closing rings are acceptable IF the lever-lock is secured with a strong pin so that bears cannot easily open them.
